Most guides to choosing a weekender bag begin with capacity. Litres, compartments, the width of the shoulder strap. These things matter, and we will come to them. They are not where the decision is made.

A weekender is the bag you carry when you leave for a reason of your own. Two nights, perhaps three. No itinerary that requires a suitcase. It sits beside you in the car, under the seat on the train, in the overhead bin when the trip is short enough to justify a flight. Of all the bags a person owns, it is the one most closely tied to how they choose to spend their time.

So the useful question is not how much it holds. It is what kind of departure it belongs to.

Pleasure: The Hedonist, in waxed canvas

The Hedonist is made in anthracite waxed canvas with cognac leather trim and a sand-coloured lining.

Waxed canvas is the material of people who intend to use a thing often. It resists rain without pretending to be waterproof. It creases where you fold it and holds the crease, so the bag records how it has been packed. Over years the wax wears back at the corners and along the handles, the colour deepens, and the surface takes on the low sheen of something that has been somewhere.

The Hedonist suits the traveller who moves slowly when the occasion allows. Long lunches. A terrace at the hour when the light turns. A weekend chosen for the pleasure of it, with no obligation attached. Anthracite keeps the bag quiet in company; the cognac trim keeps it warm.

Freedom: The Libertine, in heritage canvas

The Libertine is made in khaki heritage canvas with cognac leather trim and a rose lining.

Heritage canvas is the lightest of the three constructions and the most forgiving. It carries the lineage of military kit and expedition luggage: a fabric made to be thrown into the back of a vehicle and thought about later. It softens quickly, packs down when half empty and asks nothing of its owner.

The Libertine belongs to departures that were not planned. Coastal roads. An old jeep. A message sent at eleven in the evening and a train at seven the next morning. Its owner treats freedom as a way of living rather than a gesture, and wants a bag that does not slow that down.

Khaki reads as unhurried. The rose lining is a private detail, visible only when the bag is open, which is the point.

Character: The Sovereign, in full leather

The Sovereign is made entirely in cognac leather with a sage lining.

Full leather is the most formal of the three and the one that changes most over time. It arrives with a uniform surface and leaves it behind within months. Handles darken from the hand. Corners burnish. Rain, if it comes, dries into the grain and stays there. A leather weekender bag ten years old is a document of where it has been, and no two age alike.

The Sovereign is for the traveller who does not need to be noticed and is noticed anyway. Grand hotels with old lifts. Institutions that have outlived their founders. Places where the material of an object is read before its brand.

It is also the heaviest of the three, as full leather always is. That is not a fault. It is the weight of the material, and its owner tends to know that already.

What the three bags share

The differences above are real, and they are the reason to choose one over another. The rest of the bag is common to all three.

Dimensions. 520 × 320 × 230 mm. Sized to travel as cabin luggage on most European carriers. Airline limits vary, and the strictest low-cost operators publish smaller allowances than the full-service airlines; if you fly one of them frequently, check their current figures before you rely on any weekender bag, including ours.

Caring for canvas and leather

The two materials want different things, and neither wants much.

Waxed canvas should be brushed dry and wiped with a damp cloth. It should not be machine washed, and it should never see detergent, which strips the wax. Every few years, if the surface has gone matte and the water no longer beads, a reproofing wax applied with a cloth and a little warmth restores it.

Heritage canvas takes the same treatment without the reproofing. Spot clean, air dry, leave it alone.

Full leather asks for a soft cloth and, once or twice a year, a small amount of neutral leather conditioner worked in by hand. Keep it out of direct sun when stored. Do not correct the marks it acquires. They are the reason you chose leather.

Choosing

If you are still undecided, this usually settles it.

Picture the bag on the floor beside you at the end of a trip you enjoyed. If the trip was slow and the enjoyment was in the slowness, The Hedonist. A duffle is typically cylindrical, soft-sided and carried by a single handle or strap; it prioritises volume. A weekender bag is structured, usually with a flat base and a top opening, and is sized for two to three nights. The Palm Trilogy bags are weekenders in this sense: shaped to hold their form, sized for cabin travel.

Is a canvas or leather weekender bag better?

Neither is better. Waxed canvas is lighter, more weather-resistant and ages through wear at the edges. Full leather is heavier, more formal and ages through patina across the whole surface. The choice is one of temperament and of where the bag will be carried most often.
